Artist Bio

Caroline Freudenthal is a Visual Artist, Writer/Storyteller &
a Swedish/global PR & Communication Specialist/Manager

Caroline starting painting in mid-life. An autodidact painter of abstract art working mainly in acrylic, ink and tempera, Caroline creates visual stories, often in mixed media, fusing art with storytelling. Her works include large scale pieces over 2 metres.

Since 2001 Caroline has produced a body of work comprising some 350-400 pieces, with a number of exhibitions and displays of her art at venues and art galleries in Stockholm and in New York. Her artwork is on long-running display in the Save the Children United Nations Office at the UN Plaza in New York.

Caroline's creative process often starts with an idea for a concept, before commencing work on the artistic manifestations of the theme. Taking the visual storytelling element one step further, Caroline creates figurative tableaus for the photos on her exhibition invitation cards, in which she poses with her paintings as an embodiment of the abstract themes in her artwork, teaming up with talented Swedish female photographers to realise her creative vision.

A multicultural childhood spent in England, Mexico and Sweden has inspired and influenced Caroline’s artistic expression. Major sources of inspiration include CG Jung’s reflections on Alchemy and Psychology, Écriture & Peinture Feminine, Egyptology, Norse Mythology, travel, art, design, film, fashion, music and literature.

During the spring of 2024, Caroline opened her own art studio - the Caroline Freudenthal Art Studio, at Ljusterö torg on the island of Ljusterö in the Stockholm archipelago, a space both to create and publicly exhibit her artwork.
Artist’s Statement:
“My fascination with Alchemy has led to many years of abstract interpretations of alchemical processes—a major part of my body of work is inspired and influenced by Alchemy and the various experimental stages described in the formulae for turning lead into gold.”

“I am also a big admirer of Mexican Surrealist artist Frida Kahlo, who I view as a kindred spirit through her creative expression, her loves, her life. Frida embodied the art of Peinture Feminine and the Feminine is a prominent and important feature in my work.
Frida was also a true Alchemist in both her artistic and personal representation.”
-Caroline Freudenthal
Critique:
Johan Cederlund, Museum Director, Zorn Museum in Mora, Sweden:
“Caroline Freudenthal's paintings resemble abstract depictions of nature. Her artwork brings to mind the Plein Air movement of the 1800s: the blue pieces recall Monet's garden paintings while the darker canvases resemble intricate studies of tree trunks and rocks.
Caroline’s work is a rhapsody in art.”
